This novella takes place in 1955, as a small Soviet satellite state on the Eastern Bloc begins a revolution. Nikolay Zverev is tasked with relocating people from some of the oldest buildings in his city, so that they can be leveled and replaced with more functional ones. But years of this job, bearing bad news, are taking a toll on him, and not doing his job is tantamount to treason. Suddenly, Kolay is forced to relocate everyone in his old neighborhood, and in doing so, making him destroy the homes and lives of the people that made him who he is. Kolay is backed into a corner, forced to choose between sacrificing his future or his past.

I want more from this author! His story technique is fast paced and descriptive, and I cannot get enough of it. You can feel the way his characters feel, you can imagine what's going on in the world around his characters. It all feels very... human. The life of communism in the older days. I sincerely hope it's different nowadays. The author brought a vivid description.
Filled with lovely descriptions of the characters, location, and storyline, this was a breezy read of what one man, or all men, ponder when faced with the ultimate decision doing the right thing. And if that wasn't enough, the author thrusted you into the ending of this mid-fifties Eastern European novella. I thoroughly enjoyed it...you will too!
